International Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD for short) is called “United Nations women’s rights and international peace day”. March 8th Women’s Day”. It is a festival established on March 8 every year to celebrate women’s important contributions and great achievements in the fields of economy, politics and society.

The focus of the celebration varies from region to region, from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love for women to a celebration of women’s economic, political and social achievements. Since the festival began as a political event initiated by socialist feminists, the festival has fused with the cultures of many countries.

International Women’s Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. On this day, the achievements of women are recognized, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, economic status and political stance. Since then, International Women’s Day has become a global women’s holiday with new meaning for women in both developed and developing countries. The growing international women’s movement was strengthened through four UN global conferences on women. In its drive, the commemoration has become a clarion call for concerted efforts for women’s rights and women’s participation in political and economic affairs.

The Hundred Years of International Working Women’s Day

Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1909, when the Socialist Party of America issued a manifesto calling for observances to be held on the last Sunday in February each year, an annual celebration that continued until 1913. In Western countries, the commemoration of International Women’s Day was held normally during the 1920s and 1930s, but was interrupted later. It was not until the 1960s that it gradually recovered with the rise of the feminist movement.

The United Nations has celebrated International Women’s Day since the International Year of Women in 1975, recognizing the right of ordinary women to fight for equal participation in society. In 1997 the General Assembly passed a resolution requesting each country to choose a day of the year as United Nations Women’s Rights Day, in accordance with its own history and national traditions. The United Nations initiative established a national legal framework for achieving equality between women and men and raised public awareness of the need to advance the status of women in all aspects.

The Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China held in July 1922 began to pay attention to women’s issues, and in the “Resolution on the Women’s Movement” stated that “women’s liberation must be accompanied by labor liberation. Only then can they be truly liberated”, the guiding principle of the women’s movement that has since followed. Later, Xiang Jingyu became the first women’s minister of the CCP and led many women workers’ struggles in Shanghai.
